BAND PHOTOGRAPHY
Monthly Feature
June 2020 Feature Photographer - Chantal Roeske
As a musician myself, I always enjoy being at shows and especially acting as a hired gun in terms of capturing the evening with my camera. But, even from a personal documentary perspective (that’s code for free) welding a lens usually gets me up close on shows I just want to be in the front for, like this Mutoid Man show at The Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids, Michigan almost exactly two years ago in May. (Wow, that went by fast!)
I really dig Mutoid Man and though I wasn’t as well versed in Brodsky’s former band Cave In until later on, it was an instant connection for me as a heavy guitarist because RIFFS. They brought awesome game to this show. It was really nice to talk with Stephen for a bit after they played and experience my first show with them directly after I had just purchased their album War Moans on vinyl (even though it had been released for almost a year at that point.)
As a guitarist in a heavy band I guess I always sort of hated flash photography, and even though as a photographer I know how to use it well and utilize it often for a particular “look”, I love the grit of a pumped up ISO and the incognito abilities that shooting with a wide/fast lens in the dark affords. I shot this session with my Canon 6d plus Sigma art 35mm 1.4, and a prism, and a gin and tonic.
